solar timeSolar Time
with Gilad Lotan

A simple metering interface to bring awareness of the potential solar energy available in relation to daily electricity consumption. NYU's Interactive Telecommunications Program owns one 80 watt solar panel located on the roof of its building.

Our system logs the amount of solar energy converted to electricity (volts) through a wireless radio system in place on the 12th floor. Solar Time is a physical display which presents current, live readings of the solar energy adjacent to a reading of power consumption locally (specifically the ITP lounge). Our intention is to show what's possible with a single solar panel, and compare that with what we consume on a daily basis. Units will be presented as icons of everyday objects such as TVs and laptops, rather than volts/amps/watts.

A flower sculpted from recycled plastic bags for the Garden ElectricGarden Electric
with Megan MacMurray

A synthetic garden constructed from recycled materials which responds to the amount of electricity you consume. Our goal with this project was to measure how much electricity we use on a daily basis and visualize that through the life and death of flowers within the garden.

When the lamp is turned off and energy is conserved, the garden thrives and stays inflated; when the lamp is on, the garden is placed in a dying state. The Garden Electric invites you to interact with the garden by turning appliances on and off, allowing electricity to take on a tactile form.

with Sonali Sridhar & Pollie Barden

remember me looks at mobile communication through Bluetooth devices as well as the community of mobile objects present on our bodies on a daily basis. One goal of this project is to comment on the dependence we've developed on these external elements. By allowing them to converse with each other via Bluetooth, we play with the notion of bringing them to life, and creating a second skin. Secondly, we also attempt to protect our digital skin through a layer of noise created by their conversation, as well as a layer of physical switches to determine their presence/absence.

An inflatable tube MIDI controller inspired by your standard bike pump. This was a fun and entertaining experiment using flex sensors to control note and program value, and a potentiometer to control the tempo of the ostinato of the notes.
